If you had rats in your building you wouldn’t hesitate to call the rat catcher, but urban feral pest birds are potentially even more of a health risk than RATS” read some of the shocking problems that  these rats with wings cause below.

Urban pest birds pose a considerable threat to human health due to the number of diseases and bacteria that are present in their droppings and nests. Feral birds are potentially even more of a health risk than rats.
The diseases relating to pest birds are:

Ornithosis
Ornithosis is a 'flu-like' disease most commonly found in pigeon droppings. Fatalities are rare, but can occur as with any other influenza virus. However a more serious form, called psittacosis can also be present in their droppings - the symptoms of this are more like common pneumonia.

Allergic Alveolitis
More commonly known as 'Pigeon Fancier's Lung' this is a serious allergic reaction which can only be cured by the removal of the birds and their nests. Allergic Alveolitis can result in permanent lung damage.

Histoplasmosis
The spores of this fungus thrive in bird droppings and can affect humans who breathe them in. This particularly becomes an issue when birds are nesting on air intakes when spores can be spread throughout the whole building.

Salmonella
Gulls in particular have been linked with the spread of E. coli because they scavenge for food on rubbish tips, sewerage treatment works and sewerage outfall pipes. The E. coli organisms are present in gull droppings and can spread to water supplies and any food premises.

SLIP HAZARDS
Wet bird droppings are very slippery and can be dangerous where the public has access. The problem is even more significant if the droppings are on emergency stairways or fire escapes, which is where most urban birds tend to nest.
Should a member of the public injure themselves as a result of slipping on droppings on your property you may find yourself liable for compensation.

AESTHETIC APPEARANCE
Bird fouling and nesting debris can seriously damage a building's aesthetic appearance. This can present a negative image of your business and to your customers. This negative impact on your business is even greater if you are in the food industry

STRUCTURAL DAMAGE
Bird infestation can cause structural damage to your building in a number of ways. Bird droppings have an acidic content which is corrosive to paintwork and masonry and in some circumstances it has been known that the sheer weight of bird fouling can lead to roofs and ceilings collapsing.

BIRD PROOFING METHODS

Bird netting can be used against any of the urban pest birds, when fitted properly, with the correct mesh size for the species of bird. Nets can be fitted horizontally to exclude pest birds from open areas such as walls and courtyards. They can also be fitted vertically to proof large frontages of buildings. A combination of horizontal and vertical fitting nets can be used to proof installations such as air conditioning units on roofs.

Bird Spikes are a deterrent which rely on upward pointing wires or spikes to deter the birds. There are many different products available on the market due to the different size of urban pest birds. These bird spike systems usually stick in place with a silicone adhesive but have been known to be screwed into place in difficult to access areas and harsh environments.

Wire systems are cost-effective and are an extremely versatile bird deterrent system. It can be adapted to fit almost any building or architectural feature. The wire system is used for the bigger urban pest birds such as pigeons and gulls.

Ultrasonic birdscarers are very effective on many urban pests such as mice, rats and particularly birds, which have excellent eye sight, typically 8 times better than a young person. The ultrasonic scarers exploit this with a 100 hertz strobe light which (depending on the model) flashes when sounding.

Barrier Coil system is an extendable stainless steel coil, held in place with a variety of fixings, including glue. It presents a physical barrier to birds landing and is an unstable platform for them to stand on.

Bird Brush excludes smaller birds such as sparrows, and rodents such as mice, from gaining entry into buildings. It is fitted to seal gaps at the top, sides and bottom of external doors.

Bird Repellent Gel - the gel forms an unstable surface for birds to stand on. However, to remain effective it will need to be replaced within 1-2 years. It becomes hard, dirty and difficult to remove.

Egg Oiling is highly effective with dealing with nesting gulls. Gulls can become aggressive (and have been known to attack humans and pets like dogs etc) during the nesting season causing a hazard to people and pets in the area. Egg oiling prevents the eggs from hatching reducing aggression in gulls. This will help reduce the colony over a period of time, but more importantly it will allow for a management program to be put in place early during the breeding season the following year resulting in reduced pressure from birds.
